Myths for Wood or Deck Restoration
If your deck is starting to show its age, and you are considering deck restoration, read this post on a few myths that you need to know before you continue.
New wood doesn’t need cleaning
False, new wood must be prepped with a quality wood cleaner and a brightener. This helps to remove mill glaze, dirt, and grime. These steps will open the pores on the wood which in turn will allow the stain to penetrate deeper. The better the wood stain is absorbed, the better it works.
If an extra coat is applied it will last longer
Applying extra coats will not make the stain last any longer. This will, in fact, cause a buildup on the surface instead of penetrating into the wood. In actuality over applying can result in the stain prematurely failing.
Deck stripping is hard
Stripping the wood of stain isn’t that difficult, however, it will depend on the finish and amount of previous coats that were applied. Wood stripper works by penetrating the old coating and softening the bond. In most cases, it is easier to use a wood stripper instead of a cleaner.
Applying a water-based stain is easier than an oil-based one
it is just as easy to apply an oil-based wood stain. Water-based ones do dry faster than their counterparts. However, it is beneficial to have a stain that does not dry fast. As there is less chance for overlaps happening.
Extended Warranties
Any warranty that claims more than 2 years is either limited or is playing the numbers game when it comes to claims. Nothing will look the same after a few years, as they will all wear out and fade from UV exposure. If you read a warranty claim, you will see they are limited to words such as “resists fading” or “general wear and tear”. At best all you may receive a product replacement.
